Maine offers fisherman over 6,000 freshwater lakes and ponds in addition to 32,000 miles of rivers and streams. These waters are home to a variety of trophy-sized fish, including trout (brown & brook), landlocked salmon, togue (lake trout), large & smallmouth bass, perch, splake and northern pike and pickerel. Lakes, ponds, streams and rivers offer the thrill of the catch (then, most often, the subsequent release) from ice-out to the end of September. Fly-fishing, rod & reel and trolling are all very popular. Limited catch-and-release fishing is also available in October. In winter, ice fishing provides even more opportunities for catching trout, salmon, togue, pickerel, pike and perch throughout the state.
Licenses are available for one, three, seven and 15-day excursions, or seasonal licenses may also be purchased.
